Are Badminton Shoes Good for Volleyball?

Badminton shoes for volleyball

Badminton vs Volleyball

To answer this question, we first have to take a look at each of their playing styles.

Volleyball and badminton are very similar given that they are both play on indoor synthetic or wooden courts. Furthermore, many techniques and movements used in both sports are also similar. In fact, this is what makes badminton shoes suitable for volleyball and you can use them interchangeably.

That being said, using the proper shoes for each sport is important if you want your best performance and prevent injuries, if you are at the very top level.

Both badminton and volleyball shoes have hundreds of different pairs varying in prices and quality. However, there are certain minor qualities/features that only badminton shoes have and some only on volleyball shoes. This makes each of them unique to each other.

2 Main Differences

These shoes share a lot of similarities in terms of functions and features. That being said, they are not exactly the same. Here are 2 main differences when you compare a pair of badminton shoes with volleyball shoes. They are weight and the sole thickness. Although they are main differences between them, they are not major.

Weight

The weight of the shoes is very important for both of these sports. They are both fast-paced, you cannot let the weight of your shoes slow you down.

A typical pair of badminton shoes weight between 250 grams to 330 grams. On the other hand, a typical pair of volleyball shoes weight between 300 grams to 400 grams. As you can see, badminton shoes are on average, lighter than volleyball shoes.

The lighter your shoes are the better it is for badminton as long as they are a proper pair of badminton shoes.

Badminton focuses on many quick and explosive movements. Therefore, to attain quicker movements, having badminton shoes as light as possible is favorable.

Soles

The soles of these shoes are made of the same material, gum rubber. Gum rubber provides good traction on an indoor court and is non-marking. The only difference is that the soles of badminton shoes are thinner than those on volleyball shoes.

This difference in thickness of soles is more important than you think. The thin soles of badminton shoes give you a lower center of gravity to improve stability and traction. In fact, this will prevent you from unnecessarily slipping or getting injured.

2 Small Differences

Given the main differences between these 2 sports shoes are not that major, these are even less noticeable. Here are 2 small differences to be aware of… they are ankle support and shock absorption.

Chances are you will not even notice any of these differences between badminton  shoes and volleyball shoes if you were to try them.

Ankle Support

Both shoes have low ankle support. This means your ankles are able to move freely and be flexible. However, there is one small difference between them.

Badminton shoes do not have lateral support while volleyball shoes do. Although there are many lateral movements in a game of badminton, they design the shoes with no lateral support. They made this on purpose to strengthen your ankles against impact, which in turn lowers the chances of injury.

Shock Absorption

Shock absorption is important in both shoes. Therefore, any good pair of badminton or volleyball shoes should come built-in with good shock absorption. The only small difference is that volleyball shoes have a little extra padding in front of the shoes.

Should I wear them interchangeably?

You can wear them interchangeably but I do not recommend it if you are playing at the highest level for each sport. Wearing shoes that are not specifically made for that sport will increase the chances of injuries (but not much) if the intensity is high.

On the other hand, if you are not playing both of these sports for fun without any real intensity, using them interchangeably is not a problem at all.

Will it affect my performance?

The short answer is no. For most people, they are not playing volleyball or badminton at the highest level. (I am talking about world competition type of level)

Since the difference between badminton shoes and volleyball shoes are so minor, you will not notice or see a difference in your performance. If you are a professional player where every small movement and details matter, then yes, you might just notice a small drop in performance when you use these shoes interchangeably.

Recommendations

If you want to get shoes that are perfect for both sports, here is my recommendation. These are really cheap and affordable. Despite it being cheap, it one of the best shoes you can get in terms of value for your money. The comfort and protection you get from these shoes for volleyball and badminton are fantastic!

Conclusion

So, the final answer to this question is a big yes… most of the time. Even though there are several minor differences between these 2 shoes, badminton shoes are still great for volleyball. The only rare case where they are not so great for volleyball is if you play the sport as a career and a professional player. For most people, badminton shoes are good enough to play volleyball with.

Final Note

One last note… from my experience, badminton shoes usually last longer than volleyball shoes. So, it is not a bad move to buy a pair of badminton shoes for volleyball. It can save you quite a bit of money in the long term.
